Christmas is approaching fast, and if you haven’t started your shopping yet you better get on it soon! We get asked quite a bit what we recommend as gifts. Peter started off with a post about the great Abel nippers, always a classic gift.
Personally, I think there are a lot of really great gift ideas in the shop. There’s something for every taste and budget, even for those who don’t fish. But one of my favorite things in the shop would have to be the fly reels from The Bozeman Reel Company.
The Bozeman Reels are very well designed and made. The RS reel is their more modern design, with several sizes to fit any rod from a 3wt to a 9wt. They have one of the smoothest drags of anything we carry in the case and are very well put together. These are reels designed to take years and years of use and abuse. I’ve personally been fishing with an RS 527 since early July and can’t say enough good things about them. (Keep an eye out for a more in depth review coming soon!)
The SC reels carry the classic style and look of a more refined era. Back when rods were made of bamboo and fly fishing was a gentlemen’s game. The SC is also super smooth and built like a tank. It features a click and pawl drag, so big trout will be lots of fun. But the real reason to fall in love with this reel is its classic good look. It includes a wooden box and a vintage reel case.
The Bozeman Reels are a little more pricey than some other brands we carry, and there is a good reason for that. Not only is it the premium components and craftsmanship, but it is the fact that these reels are completely made right here in Bozeman, MT. When you buy a Bozeman Reel you are supporting a business and people in our hometown. In the shop it’s fun to see people’s eyes light up when you tell them that the reels are made just a few blocks down the road.
Small business is what drives this industry. There are a lot of small businesses on both the manufacturing and retail side of things. Shopping small is always a great idea, and it’s even better when small is local too.
The RS reels are priced from $410-$575, and the SC runs $600-675, depending on which size you get. Come in the shop and take a look at them, or you can find them on our webstore.
