The boys from Carolina come to Montana every year in the fall to chase big browns and enjoy some solitude on the quiet rivers. Guide Ken Stock and myself put in some good time on the water with anglers Brandon, Grant, Craig, and Chris. We floated the Yellowstone the first day with decent fishing and a healthy breeze helping us down the river. The fish ate some streamers and some nymphs enough to keep it interesting but not on fire.
So we decided to hit up the Madison above Ennis the next day and hit it just right with strong hungry fish mostly eating subsurface and heading straight downstream when hooked. We chased down a number of fish and landed some even the one that wrapped us up in a root ball somehow made it to the net.
The third day we headed to the Valley Gardens stretch to search for some more lake run trout and found a few big ones in the morning but had a tough time topping 12" fish in the afternoon. My guess is that the bigger fish are all on their way upstream as they should be this time of year. All in all an awesome three days full of good fishing and good friendly smack talking to be had by everyone. Glad you guys could make it out this year and thanks for fishing with us! See ya next year.
