Took a hike up Palisade Falls the other day and did some creek fishing on the way back along Hyalite. The creek was loaded with feisty bows and brookies that took the smaller sz. 18 attractor patterns really well. Got a few on the tungsten sure strike nymph in the faster pocket water stretches czech nymphing as well. A great work out for my little fiberglass 3wt. this spot is so incredible to be within reach of Bozeman.
The Lower Mad continues to fish well and did see a spike in flows this morning. I dont think it will turn it off since the water has been flowing pretty high for almost two weeks now, they should still be in the slower pockets munching crayfish like it's their job. The water on the Upper Mad is high but also fishing well with stonefly nymphs.
When will we see the Salmonfly on the Madison? very soon....
Been seeing a few big bugs on the lower and they typically move through the canyon pretty quickly so i'd say you should see them around Valley Gardens in 5-7 days (my best guess) Just enough time to stock up on new fly patterns or materials. I've been playing around with a salmon fly skater pattern the last few weeks. Never caught one on a skated fly but that's my goal for this year...it's good to have goals.
