Things have been a little slow on the Gallatin over the past week or so. Flows are still in good shape, and water temps are fishable along the entire river. The lower river is a bit warmer than up high and generally won’t fish quite as well. The canyon is about your best bet. Axtel, Gallatin Gateway, and any of the access points down in the valley have been really busy lately.
Attractor flies will work well for you, so bring some Stimulators, Royal Wulffs, Humpies, Parachute Adams and Purple Hazes. There might be a few caddis around in the evenings, but they are pretty much done. We’ve heard a few reports of scattered BWOs showing up. If you want to throw streamers, keep them small. Nymphing with small beadheads can save a day of slow dry fly fishing.
I wouldn’t be too surprised if the river muddies up for a couple days with all the rain we’ve gotten this week.
