Aside from this morning the weather has been fantastic and so has the fishing. Yesterday was around 70 degrees and sunny and today the spring wind and rain smacked us around. Whatever the clouds and cool temperatures usually bring out the BWOs. We are starting to see more fish up on top going after the baetis and midges. We've seen a few skwallas and march browns but nothing really targeting them on the surface yet.
Had a blast with long time clients/friends Nick and Keegan on the Madison the other day who visit Montana occasionally to trout fish and snowboard. I let them fish my 9'6" 6wt. Winston Nexus with a Scientific Angler Steelhead taper on it which is the best combo for a nymph/streamer/big dry set up i've found. The steelhead taper is unique in that it has a 37ft. head with a 25ft. rear taper which gives you more power to turn over big bugs and also mend at long distances with out moving your indicator. This longer taper also gives a smooth even loop on long bomb casts and gives you a heavy enough line to drive out a 40ft. roll cast or single hand spey cast.
However you want to look at it even though this taper is labeled for steelhead it is awesome for trout fishing. It was cool watching Nick and Keegan power out casts that formed nice loops and learn about the most efficient cast and drift to make it work. Thanks for the good day fellas!
