Fly fisherman do reach a point were your not picky about were you go or how you fish but just that you get out and go fishing. That's the general consensus lately and we are sometimes pleasantly surprised. Sure the water is high but the fish have not dissapeared so we don't care how much visibilty we have right now it's sunny and warm so we're going fishing. A lot of smaller creeks are running totally clear so dust off your 3wt. and stalk some trout.
YELLOWSTONE RIVER: 25,200cfs
The stone is raging along it's high and muddy runoff path. I would not recommend fishing it right now as today's rain have brought it up about another 1,000cfs since we checked it this morning. A lot of guys are getting the sand bags ready in case it floods as bad as in 1997. Should be an amazing late season over here and I'm guessing should be fishable by July 15th, just a guess.
GALLATIN RIVER: 5,090cfs
Still pretty high and fast with little visibility but some decent fishing can be had in slower moving pools and back eddies. Difficult walk wading with the speed of the water but heavy nymph rigs with bright colored flies is the way to go. The visibility increases a little above the Taylor's Fork but still the same bright nymph rig game. recommended flies: sparkle worm, delektable worm pink, rubberlegs, red copper john, red egg, Bloody Mary, Wooly Bugger, Sculpzilla Jr. The upper section has been on a steady decline in flows over the last four days and has been producing some awesome fishing. Lot's of baetis, yellow sallies, and caddis coming off with a few heads coming up on inside soft seams but the nymph from of all those bugs have been pretty consistent. Lot's of good wading up around 3 dollar bridge and Raynold's Pass with dead drifted streamers and san juan worms and better water clarity above the West Fork. recommended flies: Sculpzilla, Bow river bugger, Yellow Yummy, Black Flash Bugger, Sparkle worm, Silvey's beadhead pupa, hotwire caddis, red copper john, lightning bug, bloody mary, tungsten yellow sally, Para. Baetis, Blooms Caddis, H's Low Rider Sally Steadily dropping flows on the lower over the last couple of days have made it an okay fishable option. Folks are catching steady spawner sized rainbows and a few big browns here and there mostly on nymphs and streamers. The water clarity is 4"-6" so the trout aren't chasing or moving to far to eat but get em right in front of them and it's game on. recommended flies: Bow River Bugger, Yuk Bug, JJ's Special, rubberlegs, Silvey's beadhead pupa, lightning bug, chartruese copper john, hotwire caddis, sparkle worm, lil spanker pheseant tail recommended flies: JJ's Special, Sculpzilla, Yellow Yummy, H's Flesh Eating Sculpin, Hares Ear, rubberlegs, sex fly, iron sally, olive soft hackle, peacock Elk hair caddis, Bloom's Caddis, PMD transitional, PMD tilt-wing, PMD SqueezerUPPER MADISON: 2,870cfs

MISSOURI RIVER: 21,800cfs
THE BIG HOLE: 6,890cfs
THE BEAVERHEAD: 802cfs
The Beaverhead is very clear from the dam down to about Heneberry and then gets pretty muddy but fishing awesome throughout. Lots of great nymphing water with a few heads coming up sparingly. Streamers have been best dead drifted under the indicator. Either way it is just nice to look at clear water at the moment. Definately a good choice right now even if you have to do two short floats from the dam on down. recommended flies: Double bead stone, Military may, Hares Ear, copper john, Batman Blue, lightning bug, Snapping Craw, chubby chernobyl, yellow sally, elk hair caddis

Sunny warm days with classic Montana afternoon T-storms makes it really feel like the season is in full swing and the trout are cooperating to. The reports are starting to spread from just spring creeks and stillwaters and more rivers are fishing well. Maybe still a bit early to float the Yellowstone but the sun is shining and we're going fishing.

Today marks the first day of summer according to the calendar but looking out the window of the fly shop here in Bozeman I have to agree with the new season. Bright sunshine and 70 degree temps are getting folks out of the house and in search of water to fish. The freestones are still high in the area and well so are the tailwaters but at least those are consistently high, a good thing for trout fishing.

Finally getting some nice warm sunshine after some torrential showers in the last few days. The rain has been bringing the freestones up and a lot of folks are filling sandbags in preparation for the peak flows. The tailwaters are fishing pretty decent right now and if you get a steady 24-48 hours of constant flows go fish, if not think about stillwaters or spring creeks which are fishing fantastic.

A great choice right now if your a kayaker, white water rafter, or mushroom hunter. The Gallatin is high and muddy with almost no visibility even above the taylors fork. I would not recommend it for fishing right now, should be awesome again in a couple of weeks. The recent rain over the last couple of days has brought some river levels up. Some rivers are dangerous and others just real high so if you need an up to the moment report call 406-587-9111 or stop by the shop.

Some real nice fish being taken on stonefly imitations lately between Quake and Hebgen lake, which seems to have the best visibility, fishing, and a lot of fishermen. The rest of the river is in decent shape but more mud and less people. The fishing can really be pretty good in the dirt as long as you focus on inside troughs and tailouts, bright bead head nymphs seem to help out to. We recommend picking a float that you can get out and really work the holes and bounce the flies off the trout's face since they won't move that far for a fly but will gladly eat an easy meal placed in front of them. recommended flies: Mega Prince, rubberlegs, King Prince, Bow River Bugger, Silveys Sculpin, pheseant tail flashback, olive soft hackle, Double bead Stone, red egg, sparkle worm Despite recent rain and flow spike from the dam I actually had a decent report from the lower today. Nothing amazing but a few good fish picked up on sculpin patterns so as soon as the lower gets some consistent flows it should be fishing great again. Still muddy and off color but fishable. recommended flies: sparkle worm, rubberlegs, bow river bugger, chickabou craw, lightning bug, king prince, I.E.D, lil spanker red Some of the best fishing and steady flows in the state right now. It is no secret however and you might be one of the 40 trailers putting in below Holter dam ready to see the indicator dart upstream. The nymph and streamer game is the way to go but man do the trout fight hard so it is definately worth the drive. recommended flies: wire worm, I.E.D., micro may, flesh eating sculpin, lightning bug, pheseant tail, bloom's soft hackle brown, copper john The river has come up considerably in the last few days. Some real interesting hydraulics when it's this cranking so not the best place to learn to row a boat but have had some decent reports on streamers so if you know what your doing fish on. recommended flies: JJ's Special, Sculpzilla, H's Flesh Eating Sculpin, Hares Ear, rubberlegs, sex fly, iron sally, olive soft hackle, peacock Elk hair caddis, Bloom's Caddis The Beaverhead is very clear from the dam down to about Heneberry and then gets pretty muddy but fishing awesome throughout. During the high water period in Montana you occasionally get a window of oppertunity, to have some great fishing, from mother nature. When temperatures drop the cool weather slows the runoff down enough to get a foot or two of visibility and the fish being oppertunists take advantage of this time to feed as much as possible while they can. So this weekend if we get the 75 degree weather they say will happen the rivers will go back up and look more chocolatey, but for the brief moment of the present you have the green light to hit the rivers. The lakes and spring creeks are still fishing spectacularly as well.
YELLOWSTONE RIVER: 11,400cfs
The stone has had some good fishing in the last couple of days with guys picking up some good trout on bright streamers and rubberleg nymphs. Still real fast and muddy but navigable in the paradise valley sections. It most likely will rise again this weekend if we get warm weather so still be cautious.
recommended flies: Dali Lama, JJ's Special, white zonkers, sparkle worm, pat's rubberlegs, lil spanker blue, red leech lion
GALLATIN RIVER: 2,410cfs
The Gallatin is still off color in the canyon and valley sections but very clear above the Taylor's Fork and fishing well. Definately a good choice for some nice walk wading but keep in mind even a small increase in flows can generate a lot of moving force so please use caution.
recommended flies:Black Wooly Bugger, Sculpzilla, Rubberlegs, King Prince, Bloody Mary, San Juan worm, I.E.D., Iron Sally

Still pretty off color and especially brown below Cherry Creek, above Cherry it has that pale green/brown color with maybe a foot of visibility. Not amazing but have had some good fish taken on streamers swung and stripped along the banks as well as nymphing with big stone flies and flashy beadheads.
recommended flies: sculpzilla, dali lama, silveys sculpin, snapping craw, JJ's Special, brown rubberlegs, lightning bugs, pheseant tail flashback, red copper john, Hares Ear
MISSOURI RIVER: 14,300cfs
Things are silly good right now on the MO around Craig but dry fly purists need not apply because it is a pretty much a wet fly game with a long leash. 12ft from indicator to lead fly is the norm and if you know the lies the fish are pretty stacked up with lots of 20+ inch browns and some big fat rainbows to. Some decent days with bright streamers as well, not real consistent but this ain't anything the dedicated streamer fisher hasn't heard before. Commit the day to streamers and you may go home with a goose egg or with the fish of a lifetime, the big ones get that size eating little fish more so than insects. The MO is a real good choice for now.
recommended flies: Wire worm, I.E.D., Willis Worm, Dali Lama, Sculpzilla, Pearl Zonker, micro may, tailwater tiny, iron sally, sex fly, lil spanker pheseant tail, black copper john
THE BIG HOLE: 4,770cfs
Some real interesting things happening on the Big Hole right now. Good Flows, awesome streamer fishing, Caddis...yes Caddis. Two days ago there were plenty of heads coming up for some mottled grey caddis then yesterday some wind and snow came through and stopped the dry flies. The weather could bring them back out this weekend but we all know how that goes. Either way the wet flies are pretty awesome with streamers up in the willows and nymphs in deeper holes. Flows are still high and challenging so experience on the oars is a must. The Big hole swallows boats every year in high water so use caution. We almost got blown over yesterday by a 45MPH gust of wind and had to hunker down till the storm passed, remember to use best judgment and that no trout is worth a sank boat or worse.

LAKES AND RESERVOIRS
Harrison, Daily, Hyalite, Hebgen are all fishing great with some big fish cruising the shores and hanging in deeper water as well. Sinking lines and lake patterns like leeches, chironomids, worms, and nymphs are a real consitent method. Fish rising to midges and callibaetis on a good still day. Call or stop by the shop for more details cause it can be a blast fishing the Montana stillwaters right now.
recommended flies: Hare's Ear, pheseant tail, willis worm, griffith's gnat, Hale Bopp leech, wooly bugger, sculpzilla, Q's Callibaetis
