Rod Review: R.L. Winston Boron III X
The perfect trout rod means something different to everyone. You want something that is delicate enough to lay down small flies and light tippets, but strong enough to throw a double nymph rig, cut through the wind, and fight big fish. You also want something that is sensitive enough to feel every head shake of the fish you’re fighting.
Fly fishing is a sport that inspires a lot of dedication. You see anglers that are dedicated to only fishing dries, or only fishing soft hackles on the swing, or only fishing one particular river. Once you find something that works for you, why do anything else?
One thing that I’ve been pretty dedicated to lately is swinging flies on a Spey rod for trout. It’s one of those things that is still new enough out here you don’t see very many people doing it or even talking about it. But it works. Very well.
Fly Tying Video: Complex Dubbing Twist Zonker
We've been wanting to do some fly tying videos for some time now, and finally have some to show! The Bozeman Angler's first fly tying video is now up on YouTube! Subscribe to our channel to keep up to date on the latest videos we post.
The fly we chose to post first is a Complex Dubbing Twist Zonker. Getting inspiration from the classic zonker, bonefish flies, and the guys at Fly Fish Food, Peter crafted this fly for rivers like the Missouri and the Madison. It works very well. It's been fished on the swing, dead drifted and stripped and it always looks good in the water.
You Know It's Going To Be A Good Day When...
You know it's going to be a good day on the water when you haven't even been there for more than a couple mores and have already lost track of how many fish you've caught.
While Peter and I are stuck in the shop on this beautiful and sunny day, shop guy Ethan and guide Ken Stock are out on the Missouri. In the sunshine. Catching fish. Hand over fist. And sending me lots of pictures. Damn.
Those days when the fishing is just lights out can be few and far between and should always be enjoyed. If you know where to go and what to use and the conditions line up, you can have days like that even in the middle of winter. Some of the best days of fishing I've ever seen or had have been in the winter months.
