Forecast called for rain and snow with 80% chance of precipitation yesterday so i thought it might just be a nice day for a drive but when i got to the river other than a bit of wind it was a perfect day to wet a line. Had decent action on nymphs and sculpin/crayfish patterns with every brown going crazy for a pink ray charles/fire bead and every rainbow aggressively looking for a big fat sculpin meal. The thick layer of cloud cover brought out some dense clouds of midges and a...
Have you guys heard about this new fad that has fly shops and fly tiers standing on their tying bench yelling, "What the hell!"? Apparently, young fashionable women all over the country are lashing long colorful feathers in their hair and calling them, feather hair extensions. No big deal right? It's just another goofy phase that will go just as quickly...
Just got back from a few incredible weeks traveling and fishing through New Zealand's North and South Islands so here is a quick recap of what i found. Started off on the North Island around Rotorua fishing and telling jokes with Hugh Mcdowell. A wealth of knowledge and stories on fly fishing who's eyes still light up like a young lad when recalling a cracker trout. Fly fishing in New Zealand puts the criminal mind to work at first stalking the wary trout in crystal clear...
Like the melting snow pack, fly flickers were pooling in the lower Maddi. Trading in the bibs for waders, the sticks tried to pluck trout from some cold ass water under spring skies. These kind of spring days don't mean easy fishing, though. These cold waters slow the trout down, so don't forget to look for deep, slow water. Right now the fish are patiently waiting in these pools looking for a crawdad or a fat headed sculpin to wonder onto their dinner plate. But in the next few week, when...
This week's guest fly tier is our own guide and friend, Ty Webb. Ty has tied flies commercially for many years. He will be demonstrating some great patterns to use on local rivers this season. This program is from noon to 3:00 on Saturday, March 19th at our shop. Come on down!
This week The Bozeman Angler is featuring guest fly tier, Doug McKnight, from noon until 3:00 p.m. Doug will be demonstrating some innovative ways to tie streamers, lake flies, hoppers, big dries and some great Mother's Day Caddis patterns to get us ready for the season.
This weekly winter program is free and open to all. We even offer you free coffee and cookies to enjoy!
We returned to our favorite winter fishing grounds in the Patagonia region of Argentina for some rest, relaxation and trout fishing. Although we encountered some very windy conditions the first week of the trip our group managed to hook some nice fish. It was great not to have to shovel snow or scrape the ice off our windshields for a while. Unfortunately, we returned to Siberia-like weather in Bozeman and longed to be basking in the sun on one of the crystal clear...
