Yellowstone River Hopper Activity
Have been on the Yellowstone a lot in the last week and it has had it's ups and downs with yesterday being the high point for me so far this season. The bird float valley area has been okay for hoppers first half of the day (get them 2 feet from the bank) and 9 foot leader nymph rigs more productive in the middle of the river seams, still a lot of whiteys though. Trout have been picked up on BH soft hackles in olive and pearl, Mega Prince, Deer hair buggers, and Sculpzillas mostly dead drifted. Afternoon has been decent dry fly fishing with brown caddis, parachute adams, royal wolff, and lime trudes still mostly close to the bank (look for foam lines along rip rap walls and your sure to get a few takes).
Floated Carbella to 26 yesterday and had really good steady action with yellow chernobyl hopper and gold BLT's both in size 10 up untill around 1pm and then they wanted nothing to do with hoppers and everything to do with royal wolffs, parachute adams, and Y's never sink trude. Rolled up to the take out just as the winds picked up to 50MPH and dumping rain and felt very relieved to not be in the boat i saw float past on the way to emigrant. Check weather reports right now and keep things like afternoon T-storms in mind since it has gotten nasty almost every late afternoon this last week.
Floated below town the other day and had a few fish on bow river buggers and chubby chernobyls but the shields was dumping in milk colored sludge which made things pretty slow. It has since cleared up and great reports have been rolling in. Bottom line being the Yellowstone is starting to fish great in all sections and get out early to get best hopper activity and beat the floatilla.
