East Gallatin July 25th
When you work in a fly shop and guide on all your days off throughout the summer it is often difficult to find time to fish yourself. So when i get off work at 4:30pm and have a few hours to remind myself what it is i love about Montana where do I go? The East Gallatin is the closest trout stream to my house and one of my favorites this time of year, never too crowded, plenty of hard fighting little fish, and the occasional big lunker to keep you occupied. Busted out of work yesterday and found a bridge with no other cars and was into some nice trout within minutes. There was an awesome PMD hatch coming off but the water was still a little murky so dries were just okay. For surface action get out there late evening and the heads start coming up all over for PMD's and Caddis. Nymphing with a prince nymph, lightning bug, and sex fly was out of sight (all sizes 14-16). Didn't have time to throw streamers last night but a few days ago it was all they wanted with Silvey's Sculpin in tan being my hot pattern. Think I might head to the Main Gallatin tonight and see if they want dark streamers over there. Cloudy afternoon, low coverage, chance of t-storms, yep sounds like a good plan to me.
