Depuy's Spring Creek and Lower Madison

As a relief from the unsteady flows and staring at indicators in muddy water we decided to hit up Depuy's spring creek yesterday.  What an awe inspiring place full of selective vibrant trout.  Teamed up with shop guide/local author Miles Nolte, a seriously fun and dedicated fisherman, for a day of testing skills against smart fish. The day started with a few heads coming up sporadically to midges which produced no fish for us on top but when we switched to PMD nymphs and brown soft hackles (both size 16-18) it was game on.  Lots of really good fighting trout most being under 16" (aside for a few trophy whitefish on the lower end of the creek) but packing a hard punch, kept us entertained untill lunch. Second half of the day gave up a really nice PMD adult hatch and size 18 sulphur dun got us each a well deserved half dozen each to take the dry fly.  If you are absolutely tired of waiting for run off to get over with take the spring creek challenge.  Now if the swans would stop giving me the stink eye i'd feel better but guess that is what they do. I mean we are kind of fishing in there home after all

Now for those of you who don't mind fishing the dirt the lower madison has been producing some good fishing with big flashy nymphs. However the flows are really inconsitent so if you see flatlines on the flow charts for 24 hours or more it will be good. Floated the lower the other day with shop guide Ty Webb and trout bum Ron Fleming with okay results.  We worked hard for the fish we caught with rubberlegs being the best fly but copper zonkers, san juan worms, and pheasant tail flash backs got their attention as well.  had a trip go out today on the lower and actually had 18" visibility with good fishing.  Salmon flies are so close to popping but probably gonna have to head to the upper madison for enough visibility for the fish to see them.  So close though...you can taste it
