June 4,5,& 6 Lower Madison and Missouri River

14 clients, seven guides, three days, and two rivers. Every year the men of the Alderman family come to Montana to relax, catch up with each other, smoke cigars, and fish their tails off. This year the guys had to deal with a late run off season and some wet weather, these two situations add up to high and dirty water. But, we found them fish.
Lower Madison:
The conditions aren't ideal out there right now, but if you just change your game a little, you could run into that big fat brown or rainbow taking advantage of the fish food that the high water is kicking up off the bottom of the river. The Salmon fly nymphs are on the move and the trout know it. Even at 5000cfs, they still have to eat, and as long as you can get a couple of feet of viability you can catch fish. Big Rubber Legs, Lightning Bugs, Caddis fly emergers, and bright worm patterns are the food of choice.
Missouri River:
As long as they don't raise the river levels while your on it, you should be good to go. But, the word is that levels are going up to 10,000cfs today. This does not shut this river off. It will kill the dry fly fishing for a bit, but going deep with your tail water style flies will bring those big Mo trout to hand. San Juan Worms, PMD nymphs, Caddis emergers, Lightning Bugs, and small Pheasant Tails should all be in your Missouri River fly box.
