4-30-10 Upper Madison River
Yesterday I took client and new trout junkie, Nick Slowick to the Upper Madison for a day of walk wade fishing. I'd be lying if I said I wasn't a little worried about the weather going into the trip, but as it turned out, we had enough sunshine in between the snow and rain to make a fairly comfortable day. With the amount of clouds and mild temps, I expected, or maybe hoping is more accurate, to run into a Baetis hatch. But what we got instead was a nice March Brown hatch, and Nick got his first taste of sight fishing with a dry fly to rising trout. Most of the fish were in the 12"-15" range and eager to eat, but we spotted a bigger fish sipping bugs in a quiet pocket tight to the bank. We snuck into range and Nick gently put a CDC March Brown emerger on his nose and...bingo! 18" Bow into the net.
